The tradition

Fiestas San Isidro 2018

In May, Madrid celebrates the festivities of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of the city and the farmers.

There are more than a hundred miracles that are attributed to him and following some milestones in the life of San Isidro you can travel a part of Madrid. As it was mentioned at the time, San Isidro had the gift of easily finding water. In fact, the celebrations of these May holidays revolve around the relationship between water and the saint. The pilgrimage takes place in the Prairie of San Isidro and in the surrounding streets, and it is customary for the chulapas and chulapas to drink the “saint’s water” that springs up in a spring adjacent to the Hermitage of San Isidro.

This tradition is mixed with the one of snack donuts and lemonade in the meadows of San Isidro, if time permits. If you’re going to order a lemonade, you have to know that Madrid has wine, lemon, sugar and chopped fruit (usually apple). While, if you go to buy donuts, you can choose between the ‘silly’ (with egg), the ‘lists’ (with egg and covered with icing sugar), Santa Clara (with a layer of white meringue) and French (With almonds).
